Chapter Fifteen

Elowyn

The next week goes by in a blur. I’m surprised Weston’s apartment isn’t done yet, but the property manager has been having trouble getting licensed and bonded electricians in to finish the wiring. Not that I’m complaining. Between working at the bar, my extra shifts at the pharmacy, and trying to start and run an entire business as its sole employee without my family noticing—I’ve ended up feeling a little frayed. That isn’t to say I’m not loving it. Weston was right. I’m good at what I do. Finding a gift is like solving a puzzle, and each time I land on the perfect item, it feels like slapping down that last piece of the jigsaw, creating the perfect landscape. I even found multiple companies that could provide a life-sized chocolate gorilla for my new client. He was thrilled, to say the least. Who knew?

Even more than that, it’s therapeutic, stress-busting, and doing wonders for my self-confidence and self-esteem. I can’t help but wonder how after so short a time, Weston knows me so well. And not that superficial knowing that usually occurs between a man and a woman. A deep, soul-knowing that occurs between people who see each other as human beings—warts and all. I’m starting to think my quirks are some of the things he likes most about me.

I have a half dozen orders to send off to clients at the post office today, and I’m so frazzled by the process of labeling them and double and triple checking the mailing addresses that I don’t hear the man sneak up behind me. Christ, not again. I have got to get better at this.

“Weird,” Jesse sneers at me, cutting in front of the three people in line after me, all of whom are too polite to put up much of a fight. “Normally, you’re on the receiving end of packages.”

“Well, it’s my business.” I don’t rise to his gross innuendo and try to sound as detached as possible in my response. After all, my body count is only three, and his is probably three hundred. “And you should mind yours.”

“I’m here on business, too.” Jesse waves an envelope at me. “Besides, someone has to look out for you, since you have about as much sense as a fruit fly.”

Yes, because he’s always done such a great job of looking out for me. I’ll never understand what goes on in his head. I do, however, understand perfectly what goes on—or doesn’t go on—inside his heart. After the time I’ve spent with the man, I think it’s black in there. Empty. “I’m doing just fine without you, thank you very much.”

“You think so, but you’re delusional.” He drops his voice to a threatening whisper, leaning over my shoulder so only I can hear. “You think letting a murderer’s cock come inside your loose snatch is medicine? Whatever. Talk to your dad about how wrong that one is. A killer’s DNA is inside you, Elowyn. God, I wish I could see the look on his face when he finds out.
